The Carol Burnett ShowBy Persona Non Grata
In a decade where variety shows on television had dwindled almost to
nothing from their widespread popularity in the 50s and most new variety
shows lasted only a year or two, the Carol Burnett show spanned more than
a decade. The success can be attributed both to the chemistry of the
regular cast members, Harvey Korman, Lyle Waggoner, Vicki Lawrence, and
Tim Conway and to Carol's multi-faceted talents as a actor, singer,
comedian, mime and dancer.
The format included an opening where Carol would field questions from
the studio audience, comedy skits based on television shows or movies with
the show regulars special guest stars, and a closing with Carol appearing
as a washer-woman with a mop singing It's Time to Say Goodbye.
There were several skits that were recurring. In "Ed &
Eunice" (which later ran as a series Mama's Family on NBC)
Carol and Harvey Korman played a married couple continually at odds with
Eunice's over- critical mother played by Carol Burnett look-alike Vicky
Lawrence. In "Mr. Tudball and Mrs.Wiggens" Carol played a
bungling, incompetent blonde secretary to her increasingly disconcerted
but patiently enduring boss played by Tim Conway. "As the
Stomach Turns" was a spoof on day-time soap operas.
